Algeria and India: Historic Partnership Renewed with Parliamentary Vision

Algiers – A meeting at the People’s National Assembly underscored the enduring strength of Algerian-Indian relations and the mutual desire to broaden bilateral cooperation.

The meeting brought together the Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs, Cooperation and Community, Abib Yassine, and the Ambassador of the Republic of India to Algeria, Swati Vijay Kulkarni, in the presence of committee members.

During the discussions, Abib Yassine highlighted the deep-rooted ties between the two nations, dating back to the 1950s when India stood by the Algerian liberation revolution, recognized the provisional government, and defended the Algerian people’s right to independence within international bodies. He also recalled that diplomatic relations between the two countries began even before Algeria’s independence in June 1962, giving it a special character based on political fidelity and historical solidarity.

The Chairman emphasized the shared principles that unite the two countries, including support for non-alignment, affirmation of national sovereignty, and opposition to colonialism, in addition to continuous cooperation within the United Nations, the Non-Aligned Movement, and the Group of 77. He also mentioned coordination with the African Union. He clarified that Algeria is keen to strengthen its partnership with India in modern strategic fields, including cybersecurity, space technologies, smart agriculture, and irrigation, as well as technology and energy.

Ambassador Kulkarni expressed her appreciation for the warm reception and stressed that the bilateral relationship is based on a solid foundation of respect and understanding. She also praised Algeria’s role regionally and internationally, considering its balanced positions to be an important element in supporting stability. She indicated that India is looking forward to expanding cooperation to include technology, renewable energy, the pharmaceutical industry, and agricultural innovation.

The meeting concluded with an affirmation of the common will to move towards expanding partnership in energy, the pharmaceutical industry, and technology, and deepening exchanges.
