Restoration Begins on Algiers’ Sacred Heart Cathedral

Algiers, December 7, 2025 – Renovation work has officially commenced on the Sacred Heart Cathedral in Algiers, marking a significant step in preserving the nation’s shared religious heritage. The announcement followed a working visit to the Algerian capital by Minister of Religious Affairs and Endowments, Youcef Belmahdi.

During his visit, Minister Belmahdi, accompanied by the Governor of Algiers, Mohamed Abdenour Rabehi, inspected the project dedicated to the rehabilitation and restoration of the iconic cathedral. He received detailed briefings on the various phases of the operation before formally inaugurating the restoration works.

This initiative aligns with national efforts focused on safeguarding religious landmarks and promoting interfaith understanding. The Sacred Heart Cathedral, a prominent architectural feature of Algiers, holds historical and cultural significance for the city and the country.

The Minister also inspected the ongoing restoration project at the Sidi Mohamed Cherif Mosque in the Upper Casbah. This comprehensive restoration aims to restore the mosque to its former historical and architectural glory.

In a statement to the press, Minister Belmahdi emphasized that the visit reflects the implementation of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s directives, which prioritize the care, restoration, and preservation of historical and religious monuments throughout Algeria.

DZWatch has learned that the Ministry of Religious Affairs and Endowments has recently completed the restoration of numerous historical mosques in Algiers and Constantine. This is part of a broader state strategy aimed at protecting, promoting, and enhancing Algeria’s rich religious and historical legacy.

The restoration of both the Sacred Heart Cathedral and the Sidi Mohamed Cherif Mosque underscores the government’s commitment to preserving diverse aspects of Algeria’s cultural identity.
