Algiers, December 8, 2025 – Algeria and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) have signed a joint statement outlining cooperation in the peaceful uses of nuclear science and technology. The signing took place following discussions held via video conference between Algerian Minister of Foreign Affairs Ahmed Attaf and IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi.
The talks, held this morning at the Ministry headquarters, served as a follow-up to agreements reached during Director General Grossi’s official visit to Algeria in October.
According to a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the newly signed document, formally titled “Joint Statement on Cooperation between Algeria and the Agency in the Field of Peaceful Uses of Nuclear Science and Technology,” aims to enhance technical assistance provided by the IAEA to Algeria. This assistance will be crucial in supporting Algeria’s efforts to explore the potential of nuclear technology in various sectors.
The cooperation will specifically focus on conducting a comprehensive study to evaluate the development of peaceful applications of nuclear energy within Algeria. This includes exploring its viability in electricity generation, healthcare advancements, seawater desalination, and agricultural improvements. The statement emphasizes the commitment of both Algeria and the IAEA to ensuring the safe and responsible implementation of these technologies.
The agreement underscores Algeria’s dedication to exploring diversified energy sources and technological advancements for sustainable development, while simultaneously reinforcing its commitment to international cooperation in the peaceful application of nuclear technology under the guidance of the IAEA.
