German Official: U.S. Security Strategy ‘Unacceptable’ to Europe

A prominent German political figure has voiced strong reservations about the latest U.S. National Security Strategy, labeling certain aspects as ‘unacceptable’ from a European perspective. Friedrich Merz, a leading member of Germany’s Christian Democratic Union (CDU), made the remarks during a visit to Rhineland-Palatinate, a region in southwestern Germany that hosts significant U.S. military installations.

Merz stated, “If the Americans now want to save democracy in Europe, then, from my point of view, that is not necessary.” He added, “If Europe needs to be saved, then we can do it ourselves.” His comments reflect a growing sentiment in some European circles regarding the continent’s autonomy and its relationship with the United States.

While acknowledging that some elements of the U.S. strategy were understandable or acceptable, Merz emphasized that others were not. He suggested that his concerns align with statements made by the U.S. Vice President during the Munich Security Conference in February.

“This document reinforces my view of the current situation,” Merz explained, “which is that we in Europe, and therefore in Germany, should become more independent from the United States in terms of politics and security.” He further elaborated on his discussions with American counterparts, stating, “‘America First’ is good, but ‘America Alone’ will not serve your interests. The United States also needs partners in the world, and Europe could be one of them.”

The U.S. administration recently released its new National Security Strategy, which outlines the nation’s approach to global challenges and security threats. The document has sparked debate and discussion among allies and adversaries alike, with varying interpretations of its implications for international relations and cooperation.
