Travel Grant Fraud: Man Arrested at Tebessa Border

Tebessa, Algeria – December 10, 2025 – A traveler has been apprehended in Tebessa for allegedly attempting to circumvent the regulations surrounding the national travel grant program. According to a statement released by the Public Prosecutor at the Tebessa Court, the individual, identified as (Sh.A), was arrested on December 8th at approximately 9:00 PM.

The suspect was reportedly attempting to enter Algeria illegally from a neighboring country, bypassing official border crossings. Authorities allege that (Sh.A) had previously benefited from the travel grant, which provides citizens with 750 euros for travel expenses. The suspect’s actions suggest an attempt to evade the legal requirements associated with the grant, particularly the stipulated minimum duration of stay abroad.

During a search, law enforcement officers discovered 700 euros in foreign currency in the suspect’s possession. The Public Prosecutor’s office stated that (Sh.A) was presented before the Prosecutor on December 10th and is being charged with illegally entering national territory and violating exchange control regulations governing the movement of capital to and from abroad.

These charges fall under Article 175 bis 1 of the Penal Code and Articles 01 and 01 bis of Order 96/22, which addresses offenses related to exchange control and capital movement, as amended. The case is being processed under immediate appearance procedures before the misdemeanor division.

Following his appearance before the judge, (Sh.A) was ordered to be held in pre-trial detention. The case has been adjourned, and further legal proceedings are pending. DZWatch will continue to follow this developing story.
