Algiers, Algeria – The Grand Mosque of Algiers has received a significant donation of rare artistic treasures and historical manuscripts, enriching the collections of its Museum of Islamic Civilization. The handover ceremony took place yesterday, with Bachir Bessaoud, Director of the Mosque’s Office, and Moussa Ismail, Head of the Scientific Council, accepting the invaluable items.
The donation comes from Professor Mohamed Ben Said Cherifi, a renowned master calligrapher, and includes a diverse range of artifacts. Khaled Saber El-Sherif, Director of the Museum, emphasized the historical and artistic significance of the collection. Highlights include the original prototype manuscript of the Quran according to the Warsh recitation, attributed to Imam Nafi.
Furthermore, the collection features initial designs for Algerian currency and banknotes, including the very first ten dinar silver coin. These items offer a unique glimpse into the evolution of Algeria’s financial identity.
The donation also comprises 23 original calligraphic works by Professor Cherifi, showcasing verses from the Quran, prayers, and invocations. Notably, the collection includes the proof used in the ornamentation of the Abdelhamid Ben Badis Mosque in Algiers, demonstrating the meticulous artistry involved in creating iconic Algerian landmarks.
Beyond his personal creations, the collection includes a selection of international awards and certificates received by Professor Cherifi, along with artwork from his students. This inclusion highlights the continuity of artistic tradition and the passing of knowledge to a new generation.
Following the handover, representatives from the Grand Mosque participated in the opening session of the 16th edition of the “Algerian Scientist Medal” event, held at the Mosque’s Cultural Center. The Head of the Scientific Council delivered a speech praising the occasion and acknowledging the contributions of the honored scientists in serving science and knowledge. He also stressed the importance of preserving Algeria’s artistic and intellectual heritage for future generations.
