Grand Mosque of Algiers Receives Rare Manuscript Collection

Algiers, Algeria – The Grand Mosque of Algiers has received a significant collection of rare manuscripts and artistic treasures, enriching the holdings of its Museum of Islamic Civilization. The official handover ceremony, overseen by senior mosque officials on behalf of Dean Mohammed El-Mamoun Al-Qasimi Al-Hassani, marked a notable addition to Algeria’s cultural heritage.

The collection, donated by Mohammed Ben Said Cherifi, features invaluable historical and artistic pieces. According to Khaled Saber El-Sherif, director of the museum, the artifacts include the original draft of a manuscript of the Holy Quran in the Warsh recitation, attributed to Imam Nafi. This is a particularly significant piece for scholars and enthusiasts of Islamic calligraphy and Quranic studies.

In addition to the Quranic manuscript, the donation includes original designs for Algerian currency, including the very first ten dinar silver coin. This offers a fascinating glimpse into the nation’s economic and artistic history.

The collection also boasts twenty-three original artworks by calligrapher Cherifi, featuring Quranic verses, prayers, and invocations. A particularly noteworthy item is the template (or proof) of the Quranic verse used to decorate the Abdul Hamid Ben Badis Mosque in Algiers. Furthermore, the donation comprises a collection of international medals and certificates awarded to Cherifi, as well as artwork by his students, showcasing the continuity of artistic tradition.

Following the handover, a delegation from the Grand Mosque participated in the opening session of the sixteenth edition of the “Algerian Scholar Medal” event, held at the mosque’s cultural center. The head of the Scientific Council delivered a speech, praising the event and acknowledging the contributions of the honored scholars in the service of science and knowledge. The Grand Mosque continues to serve as a vibrant center for religious, cultural, and intellectual life in Algeria.

This acquisition significantly enhances the Grand Mosque’s role as a guardian of Islamic heritage.
