President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has issued a message commemorating the 65th anniversary of the December 11, 1960, demonstrations. The President highlighted the significance of this historical event in Algeria’s struggle for independence.
In his message, President Tebboune emphasized that the December 11, 1960, protests represented the unwavering commitment of the Algerian people to the principles outlined in the November 1, 1954 Declaration. He stated that these demonstrations, which saw Algerians from all walks of life taking to the streets, symbolized the nation’s unified desire to achieve complete independence and realize the full aspirations of the revolution.
“The massive crowds, the resounding voices, the raised flags, and the celebratory ululations during those demonstrations,” President Tebboune noted, “were a powerful expression of the unbreakable bond with the men and women who, since the dawn of November 1, had bravely faced the horrors of the liberation war, sacrificing their lives in cities, villages, and hamlets for the sake of Algeria’s freedom.”
President Tebboune further emphasized that the events of December 11, 1960, embodied the spirit of the revolutionary martyr Larbi Ben M’hidi’s famous quote: “Throw the revolution to the streets, and the people will embrace it.” He described it as a pivotal moment that significantly impacted the international perception of the Algerian revolution, showcasing its noble principles and lofty goals.
The President concluded his message by reaffirming Algeria’s commitment to upholding the principles and objectives of the revolution. He stressed the importance of preserving the memory of the martyrs, echoing the words of Didouche Mourad: “If we are martyred, preserve our memory.”
President Tebboune underscored the pride in Algeria’s rich revolutionary heritage, which he described as a source of unity and strength for the Algerian people, particularly in the face of current regional and international challenges.
