Algiers Governor Urges Action on Flood Preparedness, School Services

Algiers, December 11, 2025 – The Governor of Algiers, Mohamed Abdenour Rabhi, has emphasized the urgent need to address shortcomings in flood prevention measures and school services across the Algiers province. This announcement followed an executive council meeting where various critical issues were discussed.

According to a statement released by the province, Governor Rabhi received a detailed presentation on the ongoing interventions by various departments aimed at mitigating flood risks. These interventions include extensive cleaning and clearing of drains and waterways. The comprehensive cleaning and sanitation plan, initiated last August, was also reviewed, along with the actions taken in response to the recent severe weather conditions experienced in Algiers, which saw an unusually high rainfall of 72 mm.

The meeting also included the presentation of a comprehensive program to revitalize the city of Algiers during the winter break. This program encompasses a diverse range of artistic, cultural, and sporting activities to be held in public spaces, including parks, squares, and exhibition halls. Governor Rabhi stressed the importance of preparing these public spaces and ensuring the involvement of diverse groups to provide entertainment and recreation for children during the holiday period.

Furthermore, the council addressed the status of school services. A detailed report was presented, diagnosing the condition of heating systems in educational institutions, as well as the state of school transport and catering. In this context, the Governor emphasized the need to intervene and rectify minor deficiencies identified, which affect only approximately 2% of the nearly 1700 educational institutions across the province’s three levels of education.

The Governor reiterated the commitment of the Algiers province to ensure the safety and well-being of its citizens and students. He called for swift and decisive action to address any remaining challenges and ensure the smooth functioning of essential services.
