Algeria Solidifies Position as Top Gas Supplier to Spain

Algiers – Algeria reaffirmed its status as the primary natural gas supplier to Spain in November, securing 45.2% of Spain’s total gas imports. This figure surpasses the United States, which accounted for 24% of the supply, according to recent data.

Data from Enagas’ statistical bulletin indicates that Algerian natural gas deliveries reached 13.570 GWh in November. These supplies were transported via the Medgaz pipeline and through liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipments. By comparison, the United States provided 7.217 GWh, Russia 11%, and Nigeria 3.4%.

Over the entire year, Algeria has strengthened its position as Spain’s leading gas provider, accounting for 35% of total imports, followed by the United States at 31% and Russia at 10.6%.

Imports of natural gas from Russia saw an increase in November, reaching 3.305 GWh. This represents a three-fold increase compared to the lowest levels recorded since the onset of the war in Ukraine following the Russian invasion in February 2022, although still short of peak levels. Natural gas has not been subject to European Union sanctions on Russian energy imports. Most Russian gas shipments to Spain originate from long-term contracts with the Yamal LNG project, a consortium led by Russia’s Novatek with investors from Europe and other countries.

The European Commission proposed banning all Russian gas imports into the European market before January 1, 2028, with a potential acceleration to 2027.

As for Spain’s underground gas storage, the fill rate reached 80% at the end of November, compared to 93% during the same period last year. In the period up to December 8 of this year, gas exports increased by 19.9% compared to the same period last year, reaching 39.9 TWh, while total gas demand, including domestic consumption and exports, grew by 8.4% to reach 345.2 TWh. During November, total demand for natural gas increased by 5.7% to reach 31.12 TWh.
