UNESCO Affirms Algeria’s Primacy in Qaftan Heritage

Algiers – UNESCO has formally recognized Algeria’s historical precedence in the registration of the Qaftan as an integral component of its rich cultural heritage. This announcement follows the 20th session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage.

The committee officially adopted an amendment to the element registered in 2024 on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The amendment explicitly includes the Qaftan, now listed under the new designation: “Ceremonial Women’s Dress in Greater Eastern Algeria: Knowledge and Skills Related to Sewing and Decorating the Gandoura, M’lehfa, Qaftan, Qat, and Lihâf.”

Furthermore, the committee approved the modification of the file concerning “Rituals and Craft Skills Associated with the Wedding Dress Tradition of Tlemcen,” which was registered in 2012. This modification includes the addition of the phrase “Lebsa Qaftan” (the wearing of the Qaftan) and its translation into both French and English, thereby reinforcing the clear cultural identity of the element.

According to a statement, these decisions mark a significant diplomatic achievement for Algeria on both cultural and international fronts. They solidify Algeria’s historical right to this authentic heritage and bolster international recognition of the Qaftan as an inseparable part of the deeply rooted Algerian intangible heritage.

The statement emphasizes that this accomplishment is the culmination of the Algerian state’s efforts to preserve its cultural heritage and protect it from any attempts at imitation or appropriation. This aligns with directives from the highest authorities aimed at enhancing the value of the national heritage in all its components.

This recognition strengthens Algeria’s position within UNESCO’s list of intangible heritage, demonstrating the authenticity and richness of Algerian culture and its legacy spanning centuries.
