Doha, Qatar – The Algerian national football team’s journey in the Arab Cup has come to an end following a dramatic penalty shootout defeat. In a quarter-final match held at the Al Bayt Stadium, the team, comprised primarily of reserve players, battled fiercely against a determined United Arab Emirates (UAE) side.
The first half concluded goalless, despite Algeria’s early dominance. Two goals, one each from Badrane and Boulbine, were disallowed for offside, decisions that sparked minor protests from the Algerian players. The match was characterized by intense physicality, with UAE players committing several robust challenges. Spectators expressed surprise at the referee’s leniency, as only yellow cards were issued despite the severity of some tackles.
The second half saw Algeria break the deadlock, taking the lead and raising hopes of progressing to the semi-finals. However, the UAE responded, equalizing and ultimately forcing the game into a penalty shootout.
Despite their valiant efforts, Algeria succumbed to the pressure of the shootout, with the UAE emerging victorious and securing their place in the next round. The defeat marks a disappointing end to Algeria’s Arab Cup campaign.
