Algiers – National team coach Vladimir Petkovic is set to announce Algeria’s preliminary squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) today. The highly anticipated press conference will be held at the Nelson Mandela Stadium in Algiers, commencing at 3:00 PM local time.
According to sources familiar with the matter, the squad is expected to consist of 28 players. A notable aspect of the selection is the inclusion of four goalkeepers, a decision influenced by the injury sustained by MC Alger’s shot-stopper, Alexis Guendouz.
Goalkeeping Dilemma: Bouhalfaia in Contention
With Guendouz sidelined, Petkovic is reportedly considering CS Constantine’s Zakaria Bouhalfaia as a replacement. Bouhalfaia has impressed the coaching staff with his consistent performances. Farid Chaal remains a potential candidate, his strong showings with the national ‘A’ team in the Arab Cup boosting his chances.
Defense: Stability with Tougai’s Return
The Bosnian coach is likely to maintain the defensive structure from the previous training camp. Mohamed Amine Tougai is expected to return after recovering from injury, having regained fitness through participation in the Arab Cup. Youcef Atal, having regained his form, is also in contention, strengthening the options on the right flank. Potential defensive inclusions are Belghali, Chergui, Mandi, Bensebaini, Hadjam, Ait Nouri, and Belaid.
Midfield: Bentaleb Returns, Abdelli Out
The midfield is unlikely to see new faces, except for the return of Nabil Bentaleb. Bentaleb is poised to replace Yassine Titraoui, bringing experience to the team. On the other hand, Angers playmaker Himad Abdelli is unlikely to be included, with Petkovic preferring Houssem Aouar and Ibrahim Maze to orchestrate the attack.
Attack: Continuity Despite Absences
Despite the absence of Amine Gouiri and Youcef Belaili, Petkovic remains confident in his attacking options.
