Algeria Poised to Become Top 20 Global Tourist Destination by 2026

Algiers, Algeria – Algeria has been recognized as a rising star in global tourism, securing a spot on the list of top 20 destinations worldwide for 2026. The North African nation is attracting attention for its rich blend of ancient history and diverse natural landscapes.

The country boasts well-preserved Roman ruins, captivating historical cities, and vast, awe-inspiring deserts, offering a unique combination of cultural heritage and natural beauty. For decades, Algeria remained relatively unexplored by international tourists due to complex visa restrictions. However, recent governmental reforms are paving the way for a gradual opening, positioning Algeria as a ‘sleeping beauty’ awakening within the African tourism sector.

The Algerian government has set ambitious goals, aiming to welcome approximately 12 million visitors annually by 2030. Key initiatives include the implementation of visa-on-arrival programs for organized tours and the launch of Domestic Airlines, a subsidiary of Air Algérie, in August 2025, designed to enhance domestic air connectivity.

Efforts to preserve Algeria’s cultural heritage and support local artisans are also underway, with approximately 460,000 artisans benefiting from training and support programs. Major international tourism companies are beginning to offer packages facilitating travel to Algeria, starting in 2026.

Many visitors commence their journey in Algiers, a city reflecting layers of civilizations dating back to Phoenician times. Constantine, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and nearby Roman sites like Timgad and Djemila, are also popular destinations. The expansive Algerian Sahara, with its seemingly endless sand dunes, draws adventurers, with Djanet serving as a gateway to this unique natural environment.

Algeria’s inclusion on the list alongside destinations like Abu Dhabi, the Cook Islands, Chile, and Costa Rica, highlights its potential for sustainable tourism and its commitment to supporting local communities. This makes Algeria an attractive option for travelers seeking a blend of history, nature, and cultural immersion. DZWatch will continue to provide updates on Algeria’s burgeoning tourism sector.
