Algeria Modernizes Railway Locomotives with Local Expertise

Algiers – The National Railway Transport Company (SNTF) has announced the ongoing integration of refurbished locomotives into service, marking a significant step in the modernization of Algeria’s railway infrastructure. This initiative, entirely executed by Algerian engineers and technicians within the company’s workshops, involves the complete overhaul and modernization of 20 aging diesel-electric locomotives, according to an official statement released today.

This project is a key component of a broader strategy to modernize the railway transport fleet. The goal is to enhance locomotive performance, improve passenger service quality, and optimize the utilization of national technical resources.

The modernization process includes the incorporation of advanced technological upgrades. Notably, the adoption of the state-of-the-art EM2000 electronic control system, developed by EMD, allows for more precise control over locomotive functions. This system also contributes to reduced fuel consumption through electronic fuel injection, resulting in lower gas emissions and improved environmental sustainability. Furthermore, the upgrades enhance traction power compared to the original engine.

Modifications have also been made to the suspension system and traction motors, ensuring smoother and more comfortable journeys on the railways. The locomotives are now equipped with air conditioning, enhancing working conditions and promoting safety and performance during operation.

Through this program, the SNTF reaffirms its commitment to continuous equipment modernization, valuing national expertise, and supporting a more efficient and sustainable railway transport system that meets the demands of modern development. The company aims to provide enhanced services for passengers and businesses.
