International Insulin Smuggling Ring Busted in Relizane

Relizane, Algeria – The National Gendarmerie in Relizane has dismantled an international network specializing in pharmaceutical smuggling. This successful operation underscores ongoing efforts to combat crimes affecting the national economy and public health.

The Relizane Research and Investigation Unit successfully dismantled the network, which included five Algerian women and one foreign national. Authorities seized a significant quantity of insulin, a vital medication for diabetes patients.

The operation unfolded after the Sidi Lazreg Territorial Gendarmerie unit stopped a vehicle with foreign license plates during a routine patrol. An initial search revealed a substantial number of insulin pens concealed within luggage. The driver and three female passengers were immediately apprehended and taken to the unit headquarters for further investigation.

A more thorough search of the vehicle and its occupants uncovered additional insulin hidden inside fabric belts wrapped around the women’s bodies. Authorities also confiscated sums of money in both local and foreign currencies, along with the vehicle used in the smuggling operation.

In coordination with the Public Prosecutor at the Zemoura Court, the in-depth investigation identified two additional women involved in the scheme. Jurisdiction was extended to a neighboring province, where the two women were apprehended. Searches of their homes yielded further quantities of insulin pens and packaging materials intended for refilling, as well as additional sums of money in local and foreign currencies.

Following the completion of legal procedures, all detainees and seized items were presented to the Public Prosecutor at the Zemoura Court. This case highlights the Gendarmerie’s commitment to protecting public health and combating illegal trade practices within Algeria.
