Algiers – President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has directed key ministers to implement strategic storage mechanisms to safeguard farmers from losses due to potential agricultural surpluses and ensure price stability for consumers.
The directive was issued during a Council of Ministers meeting held earlier today, Sunday, December 14, 2025. President Tebboune specifically tasked the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, the Minister of Interior, Local Authorities, and Transportation to collaborate on a plan to mitigate the impact of market gluts on farmers, preventing them from incurring financial setbacks due to unsold produce.
The core objective of this initiative is to maintain consistent and affordable prices for essential agricultural goods. By strategically storing surplus crops during periods of high production, the government aims to create a buffer against potential shortages and price spikes in the future. This approach is intended to benefit both producers and consumers, fostering a more resilient and balanced agricultural sector.
“The President emphasized the importance of proactive measures to protect the livelihoods of our farmers and ensure the availability of affordable food for all citizens,” a statement released following the Council of Ministers meeting noted. “Strategic storage is a vital tool in achieving these goals.”
The details of the storage plan, including the specific crops to be targeted and the location of storage facilities, are expected to be announced in the coming weeks. The government is reportedly exploring various options, including utilizing existing storage infrastructure and investing in new facilities to accommodate the anticipated surplus.
This move underscores the government’s commitment to strengthening the agricultural sector and ensuring food security for the nation. By proactively addressing potential challenges, President Tebboune aims to create a more stable and sustainable food system for Algeria.
