Zelensky Signals Shift, Hints at Compromise on NATO Aspiration

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has indicated a significant shift in his country’s strategic objectives, suggesting a willingness to forgo the pursuit of NATO membership in exchange for robust Western security guarantees. This announcement comes amidst ongoing efforts to find a diplomatic resolution to the conflict with Russia.

Speaking ahead of meetings in Berlin with US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, Zelensky stated that while NATO membership had been a long-held aspiration, the reality of securing such a commitment from all allies proved challenging. The meetings were hosted by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.

“From the beginning, Ukraine’s desire was to join NATO – these are real security guarantees. But some partners from the United States and Europe did not support this direction,” Zelensky reportedly said. He elaborated that bilateral security guarantees from the United States, similar to Article 5 of the NATO treaty, along with assurances from European partners and countries like Canada and Japan, could offer a viable alternative to deter future Russian aggression.

“This is already a compromise on our part,” Zelensky emphasized, stressing the importance of these guarantees being legally binding. He further revealed that Ukraine, along with European nations and the United States, is exploring a 20-point plan aimed at achieving a ceasefire. Zelensky also noted that Kyiv is not currently engaged in direct talks with Russia.

Sources indicate that Chancellor Merz offered brief remarks before allowing the US and Ukrainian delegations to proceed with their negotiations. Zelensky’s willingness to consider security guarantees as a substitute for NATO membership represents a potentially crucial turning point in the search for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.

The discussions in Berlin are expected to continue, with other European leaders scheduled to arrive for talks on Monday. The focus remains on establishing a framework for a ceasefire and ensuring lasting security for Ukraine.
