Severe Weather Disrupts Arab Nations: School Closures and Flood Warnings

Several Arab nations are experiencing widespread and disruptive weather patterns, including heavy rainfall, strong winds, and significant temperature drops. Authorities are issuing warnings and implementing precautionary measures to mitigate potential damage and ensure public safety.

In Morocco, the Ministry of National Education, Primary Education, and Sports has announced the suspension of classes in numerous educational institutions across four provinces on Monday. This decision is a direct response to the severe weather conditions currently affecting the Kingdom.

The ministry stated that the school closures are part of a series of preventative measures designed to safeguard the well-being of students, teachers, and administrative staff. They have also indicated that further decisions may be made if the adverse weather persists or the climate situation deteriorates.

This announcement follows a warning issued by the General Directorate of Meteorology, forecasting heavy rains, significant snowfall, and strong winds expected to continue through Wednesday in various regions of the country. Morocco is currently experiencing a cold snap and what has been described as exceptional climate fluctuations.

Tragically, heavy rains in the city of Safi, western Morocco, resulted in the deaths of 21 people and injuries to others, according to official reports. The floods also caused extensive material damage to homes, businesses, and infrastructure.

Rescue and civil defense teams are actively assisting the injured and securing affected areas. Authorities are urging citizens to exercise caution, avoid riverbeds and low-lying areas, and stay informed about weather updates.

The turbulent weather is not limited to Morocco. In Saudi Arabia, authorities have suspended in-person classes at numerous schools and universities, transitioning to remote learning in some regions. Qatar’s Meteorological Department forecasts increasing cloud cover, with a chance of scattered rainfall, particularly in northern areas, accompanied by northwesterly winds and lower nighttime temperatures. A warning has also been issued.
