Al-Burhan Visits Saudi Arabia Amidst Regional Diplomacy

Sudan’s Transitional Sovereignty Council Chairman, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, arrived in Riyadh today for an official visit, responding to an invitation from Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. He was received at King Khalid International Airport by senior Saudi officials, including Prince Mohammed bin Abdul Rahman bin Abdul Aziz, the Deputy Governor of the Riyadh Region.

This visit occurs amidst significant regional diplomatic activity concerning Sudan. Notably, the Foreign Ministers of Egypt and Saudi Arabia held a phone call earlier today to discuss the evolving situation in Sudan. The call between Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdel-Aati and his Saudi counterpart, Faisal bin Farhan, underscores the international concern surrounding the ongoing conflict.

Meanwhile, in the disputed Abyei region between Sudan and South Sudan, a funeral was held for six peacekeepers from the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) who were killed in a drone attack last Saturday. The Bangladeshi army confirmed that six of its soldiers were killed and eight others injured in the attack on a UN base in the area.

The bodies of the deceased soldiers were transported by helicopter from Abyei to Wau in South Sudan, then to Entebbe Airport, and finally to Bangladesh. A source within UNISFA stated that the mission has begun preparing lists for the evacuation of its logistics camp in Kadugli, the capital of South Kordofan State, following the attack which resulted in casualties among Bangladeshi soldiers.

The mission’s security and safety unit urged UN staff to avoid the area and recommended accelerating the temporary relocation of over 30 workers.

Furthermore, the Sudan Doctors’ Network reported that nine people were killed and 17 others injured in drone strikes allegedly carried out by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in South Kordofan State. The network added that medical personnel were among those injured.

Sudan has been embroiled in a conflict between the army and the RSF since April 2023, resulting in tens of thousands of deaths, the displacement of approximately 13 million people, and a severe humanitarian crisis described as one of the worst globally. The situation remains dire, and international efforts to mediate a ceasefire and provide humanitarian aid are ongoing. DZWatch continues to monitor the situation closely.
