New Initiative to Support Impoverished Artisan Families

Algiers, November 16, 2025 – A new initiative aimed at supporting impoverished artisan families is set to launch, according to Minister of Tourism and Traditional Industry, Houria Meddahi. The ministry, in coordination with the Ministry of National Solidarity, Family and Women’s Affairs, will begin a census to identify families in need, ensuring they can access various state support mechanisms.

The Minister’s announcement came in response to a question from Senator Dalila Ben Djoudi regarding the implementation of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s directives to promote tourism and traditional industries while strengthening national solidarity. Minister Meddahi stated that the sector’s program for the coming year will integrate artisans with no income into training courses organized by local chambers of traditional industry and crafts.

She highlighted existing training pathways for female artisans at specialized institutes, as well as courses offered through agreements with the Ministry of Vocational Training and Education. Specific training programs will be scheduled next year for unemployed female artisans at the local chamber level.

Furthermore, Minister Meddahi noted that over 2,000 female artisans have already received training in institutional management to foster entrepreneurship. Coordination with the Ministry of National Solidarity, Family and Women’s Affairs will focus on identifying impoverished artisan families to facilitate their access to professional artisan cards. This will enable them to benefit from state support programs, such as those offered by the National Agency for Microcredit Management.

This targeted approach aims to provide much-needed assistance to vulnerable artisan families, ensuring the preservation and promotion of traditional crafts while improving their economic well-being.
