Madrid – A prominent Spanish historian has strongly criticized what he describes as biased interpretations and misleading readings of United Nations resolutions concerning the Western Sahara, asserting that the territory remains a region awaiting decolonization.
José Ignacio Algueró Cuervo, a respected voice on historical matters, specifically condemned the selective use and political manipulation of UN Security Council Resolution 2797 and other related documents. He argued that these resolutions are being exploited in media and political circles to falsely portray the conflict in the Western Sahara as resolved.
“The assertion that the Western Sahara issue has been settled is simply untrue,” Algueró Cuervo stated. “The reality is that the Western Sahara remains a non-self-governing territory, and the process of decolonization, as mandated by international law, is far from complete.”
The historian’s remarks highlight the ongoing debate surrounding the status of the Western Sahara, a disputed territory in North Africa. The region has been at the center of a long-standing conflict, with the Sahrawi people seeking self-determination and independence.
Algueró Cuervo emphasized the importance of adhering to international law and ensuring that the Sahrawi people are given the opportunity to exercise their right to self-determination. He called on the international community to play a more active role in facilitating a peaceful and just resolution to the conflict.
“It is imperative that we avoid the distortion of facts and uphold the principles of international law,” Algueró Cuervo concluded. “The future of the Western Sahara rests on a fair and transparent process that respects the rights and aspirations of its people.”
