Geneva, Switzerland – Algeria has reiterated its call for a just and lasting resolution to the plight of Sahrawi refugees, emphasizing the international community’s responsibility to address the root causes of forced displacement. The appeal was made during a meeting reviewing progress on pledges made at the Global Refugee Forum, held in Geneva from December 15-17.
Lounès Magramane, Secretary-General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, led the Algerian delegation and reaffirmed Algeria’s unwavering commitment to international solidarity, burden-sharing, and responsibility in the face of growing humanitarian crises and dwindling resources. He highlighted the critical need to address funding gaps that threaten humanitarian efforts worldwide.
Magramane emphasized that Algeria has been hosting Sahrawi refugees for over five decades, providing essential support in coordination with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and other international partners. This ongoing effort, he stated, aims to preserve the dignity of refugees and ensure the continuation of essential services until a fair and durable solution is achieved, allowing for their voluntary and dignified return to their homeland.
“It is imperative to address the underlying causes of forced displacement, including conflicts and colonialism,” Magramane asserted, advocating for a balanced approach that combines humanitarian assistance, protection, and sustainable solutions. He underscored the international community’s legal and moral obligation to address refugee situations arising from occupation or unresolved conflicts, particularly concerning Sahrawi refugees, while respecting the principles of international legitimacy.
The Algerian delegation also highlighted progress in implementing pledges made at the 2023 Global Refugee Forum, specifically in the areas of health, education, and infrastructure. Furthermore, Algeria is developing a comprehensive national asylum law that aligns with international standards while respecting national sovereignty. Algeria affirmed its continued commitment to supporting humanitarian action and advocating for just humanitarian causes.
