Several Arab countries are facing severe weather conditions, leading to fatalities, school closures, and infrastructure disruptions. Torrential rains and widespread flooding have created crisis situations across the region, with the adverse weather expected to persist.
In Morocco, the death toll from floods in the city of Asfi has tragically climbed to 37. Authorities are scrambling to provide aid and assess the extensive material damage. The Ministry of National Education announced a three-day suspension of classes in Asfi and surrounding areas due to the hazardous weather. The General Directorate of Meteorology has warned of continuing thunderstorms and heavy rainfall across multiple regions of the Kingdom.
The Gaza Strip is bracing for a potentially devastating new weather system. Yahya al-Sarraj, head of the Union of Municipalities of the Gaza Strip, cautioned about the dire consequences of the incoming storm, describing it as potentially more severe than previous ones. He highlighted the widespread destruction and restrictions on the entry of aid and emergency supplies imposed by the occupation, exacerbating the already critical situation. Reports indicate that hundreds of tents housing displaced people have been flooded and damaged by heavy rains, leaving many without adequate shelter.
In Saudi Arabia, schools are closed for a second consecutive day. The Riyadh education department announced that classes will be conducted remotely through the “Madrasti” platform and other approved educational platforms. The National Center for Meteorology issued yellow alerts, indicating a low-level warning, for several regions.
Egypt has also been affected, with the closure of the Arish port due to the severe weather. Other countries in the region are experiencing similar climatic challenges, with volatile conditions expected to continue throughout the week. The ongoing situation highlights the vulnerability of the region to extreme weather events and the urgent need for preparedness and effective disaster response mechanisms.
