Algeria Announces Incentives for New Bus Purchases

Algiers, Algeria – The Algerian government has announced a series of incentives aimed at facilitating the purchase of new buses, signaling a major push to modernize the nation’s transportation infrastructure. The initiative, set to fully launch in early 2026, underscores the government’s commitment to supporting operators and improving public transport across the country.

Speaking before the National People’s Assembly, Minister of Interior, Local Authorities, and Transport, Said Saayoud, emphasized the state’s dedication to providing necessary facilities for those seeking to acquire new buses. He highlighted that there are no obstacles to importing vehicles, ensuring a smooth process for fleet renewal.

The government’s plan includes the gradual phasing out of older buses. Buses exceeding 30 years of age will be removed from service, along with a significant portion of those between 20 and 30 years old, prioritizing passenger safety and service quality.

A key component of the modernization effort is the planned acquisition of 10,000 new buses for urban, suburban, and rural transport. This rollout is scheduled to take place in phases, starting in January and extending through March or April.

Furthermore, Minister Saayoud outlined plans for the development of rail transport, including the procurement of new passenger and freight cars, as well as locomotives of various types. The locomotives intended for use at the Gara Djebilet mine will feature high traction capabilities, aligning with the demands of large-scale economic projects and reinforcing the role of rail transport in national development.

These measures reflect a comprehensive strategy to enhance Algeria’s transportation sector, ensuring safer, more efficient, and modern transit options for its citizens.
