Algiers, December 18, 2025 – Algeria and Chad have solidified their partnership in the energy and mining sectors with the signing of a memorandum of understanding. The agreement was finalized following a working visit by Chad’s Minister of Petroleum, Mines, and Geology, Ndolenodji Alixe Naïmbaye, to Algeria.
The memorandum was signed by Algeria’s Minister of State, Minister of Hydrocarbons and Mines, Mohamed Arkab, and Minister Naïmbaye. According to a statement from the Ministry of Hydrocarbons and Mines, the visit, initiated at Minister Arkab’s invitation, underscores the positive momentum in cooperative relations between the two nations.
The agreement aims to broaden the scope of collaboration in petroleum, mining, and geology. It also explores potential expansion into areas of mutual interest, including refining, petrochemicals, and related activities, fostering a sustainable and mutually beneficial partnership.
Key areas of cooperation outlined in the memorandum include:
- Strengthening the regulatory and legal framework for the hydrocarbons sector through experience sharing.
- Algeria will provide support to Chad, particularly through enhanced collaboration between agencies such as ALNAFT and ARH (Algeria) and ARSAT (Chad), with the potential for specialized cooperation agreements.
In the hydrocarbons sector, both parties agreed to boost cooperation, especially in exploration and production activities, increasing oil production, refining, petrochemicals, gas valorization, and reducing gas flaring. Knowledge transfer and technical assistance will also be prioritized, with Sonatrach potentially participating in priority hydrocarbon projects in Chad.
Regarding Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), the two sides discussed developing the entire value chain, from production to distribution, while reinforcing regulatory frameworks and safety standards. Algeria expressed its readiness to provide support in training, experience sharing, and technical assistance, as well as explore joint project development.
In the mining sector, both parties emphasized the significance of strengthening cooperation, given the geological potential of both countries. This includes exchanging expertise in the exploration and sustainable exploitation of mineral resources, particularly rare and industrial minerals, and precious stones, alongside the development of related industries.
