Kenya Rescues Citizens from Russia Amid Recruitment Concerns

Nairobi, DZWatch – The Kenyan government has successfully repatriated 18 of its citizens from Russia after receiving distress calls related to alleged recruitment efforts targeting them for the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Diaspora Affairs released an official statement confirming the return of the Kenyans. The ministry stated that emergency travel documents were issued, and intensive diplomatic and consular coordination facilitated the safe return of the citizens to Nairobi. Upon arrival, the returnees will undergo a reintegration program that includes psychological and social support.

Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Musalia Mudavadi stated that the government has documented the travel details of the returnees. He emphasized that this action comes amidst increasing reports of African nationals, including Kenyans, being recruited into the Russian military.

According to the Ministry, credible information suggests that over 200 Kenyans may have been targeted for recruitment through networks operating both within Kenya and in Russia. The Kenyan Embassy in Moscow has confirmed reports of injuries and desertions among citizens following unsuccessful recruitment attempts.

Nairobi has also confirmed that it is in discussions with Russian authorities to facilitate the transfer of its citizens from military camps to the embassy, paving the way for their return. Simultaneously, the government is engaging with Ukrainian authorities to ensure the release of any Kenyans held as prisoners of war.

Mudavadi cautioned young Kenyans against falling prey to unreliable foreign job offers, urging them to verify such opportunities through the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Labour before traveling.

Despite the current situation, the government emphasized its commitment to strengthening bilateral relations with Moscow, including negotiating a bilateral labor agreement that would provide safe and reliable opportunities for Kenyans abroad. The government is working to ensure the safety and well-being of its citizens while maintaining important international partnerships.
