Parliament to Debate Criminalizing Colonialism, Amend Nationality Law

The People’s National Assembly (APN) is scheduled to debate two significant legislative proposals this Saturday: a bill criminalizing colonialism and a bill amending the nationality law.

According to a statement from the lower house of parliament, the debates will take place during a plenary session. The morning session will be dedicated to the presentation and discussion of the proposed law criminalizing French colonialism in Algeria. This initiative aims to address the historical injustices and lasting impacts of the colonial period.

In the afternoon, the Assembly will discuss a proposed law that seeks to amend and supplement Order No. 70-86, dated 15 December 1970, pertaining to the Algerian Nationality Code. These amendments are expected to address contemporary issues related to citizenship and national identity.

Earlier in the week, the Speaker of the APN, Ibrahim Boughali, met with members of the committee responsible for drafting the proposed law criminalizing colonialism. During the meeting, which was also attended by the head of the National Defense Committee, preparations for presenting the nationally important proposal were discussed.

Boughali briefed the committee members on the scheduling of the proposed law within the Assembly’s agenda and emphasized the importance of ensuring a thorough and responsible debate. He stressed the need to create conditions conducive to a constructive discussion that reflects the significance of this issue in the national consciousness and collective memory.

Various legal and organizational aspects related to the proposed legislation were also addressed during the preparatory meetings. The Assembly aims to ensure that the debates are conducted in a manner that upholds the principles of justice and historical accountability.

The proposed amendments to the Nationality Law and the bill criminalizing colonialism represent significant steps in Algeria’s ongoing efforts to address its past and shape its future.
