Algiers – The People’s National Assembly (APN) is set to convene a plenary session tomorrow, Saturday, to deliberate on two significant legislative proposals. These proposals concern the criminalization of colonialism and amendments to the Algerian Nationality Law, according to an official statement released by the Assembly today.
The morning session will be dedicated to the presentation and discussion of a proposed law aimed at criminalizing French colonialism in Algeria. This initiative underscores the parliament’s commitment to solidifying a legal framework concerning national memory and affirming Algeria’s stance on its colonial past.
The statement emphasized that this move reflects Algeria’s desire to address the historical injustices and lasting impact of the colonial period through legal means. The proposed law is expected to generate significant debate and scrutiny within the assembly.
In the afternoon, the Assembly members are scheduled to hold a second plenary session to examine and discuss a proposed law that includes amendments and additions to Order No. 70-86, dated 15 December 1970, pertaining to the Algerian Nationality Law. This amendment is expected to address issues related to citizenship acquisition, loss, and other related matters.
The inclusion of these two proposals on the Assembly’s agenda is part of a broader legislative effort to modernize the national legal system and address issues of sovereignty and historical significance. These efforts are intended to meet the current needs and aspirations of the Algerian public. The debates are anticipated to be closely followed by citizens across the country.
