Egyptian and Russian Foreign Ministers Discuss Sudan, Syria, and Gaza

Cairo – The Foreign Ministers of Egypt and Russia convened today to discuss critical regional issues, including the ongoing conflict in Sudan, the situation in Syria, and the ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip.

Following a meeting in Cairo, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdel-Aati stated, “My Russian counterpart and I discussed the situation in Sudan, emphasizing the urgent need to alleviate the suffering of the Sudanese people.” He further added, “We also examined developments in Syria and explored avenues for cooperation to preserve its territorial integrity.”

Both Abdel-Aati and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov underscored the importance of implementing and sustaining the Gaza ceasefire, particularly in light of reported violations. Minister Abdel-Aati affirmed Egypt’s intensive efforts to solidify the ceasefire and ensure the delivery of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip. He stressed the necessity of implementing UN Security Council Resolution 2803, pertaining to the Gaza ceasefire, and facilitating the operation of the Rafah crossing in both directions.

Minister Lavrov noted a significant increase in trade between Russia and Egypt, exceeding 12% recently. He also highlighted a convergence of views between the two nations on various international matters. Lavrov emphasized the need for continued diplomatic efforts to ensure the long-term sustainability of the Gaza ceasefire. He stressed the importance of working towards a two-state solution and de-escalating tensions in the West Bank.

Furthermore, Lavrov commended Egypt’s mediation efforts between Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency. He also acknowledged Egypt’s balanced stance on the Ukrainian crisis, expressing optimism that a resolution is possible after addressing the root causes of the conflict.
