Latin Patriarch Vows to Rebuild Gaza, Affirms Christian Presence

The Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa, has pledged to rebuild homes, schools, and lives in Gaza, emphasizing the enduring commitment of the Christian community to the region. Speaking to members of the church during a visit, the Patriarch affirmed that the events in Gaza will not be forgotten, but stressed the importance of looking towards the future with hope and determination.

“We will not forget what happened, but we are looking ahead,” the Patriarch stated. “We will rebuild our homes and our schools, and we will rebuild our lives. We are from here, and we will stay here. In this sea of destruction, we strive to be an example to everyone of what it means to rebuild.”

The Patriarch’s visit to Gaza, which comes ahead of Christmas, is seen as a significant gesture of solidarity. He noted the support from churches, institutions, and Christians worldwide. “You have shown during the war, and even more clearly today, what it means to remain strong in your faith,” he said. “You have provided a living testament to steadfastness, faith, and hope, which has reached the whole world.”

Cardinal Pizzaballa arrived in Gaza City accompanied by Bishop William Shomali, the General Patriarchal Vicar, and a delegation from the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem, for the annual Christmas pastoral visit to the Holy Family Church. The visit aims to assess the current situation of the parish, including humanitarian and relief efforts, ongoing rehabilitation initiatives, and future aspirations.

The Patriarch will also meet with local clergy and members of the parish to gain a clearer understanding of the community’s needs. This marks the third consecutive Christmas season that the Gaza Strip is experiencing under continued hardship.

The Latin Patriarchate stated that the Patriarch’s visit will focus on assessing the needs of the community and providing support for its future.
