Algeria Champions Sahrawi Self-Determination at UN Security Council

Algiers, December 21, 2025 – Algeria has leveraged its position as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council to robustly advocate for the inalienable right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination and independence.

Driven by a steadfast commitment to defending just causes globally, Algeria has consistently championed the Sahrawi cause within the Security Council. Algerian diplomats have engaged in tireless efforts to ensure the issue remains a priority on the international agenda.

DZWatch has learned that Algeria’s strategy involves actively participating in Security Council debates, sponsoring resolutions that support the Sahrawi people’s right to choose their own future, and engaging in bilateral discussions with other member states to build consensus around a peaceful and just resolution to the Western Sahara conflict.

“Algeria firmly believes that the Sahrawi people, like all people, have the right to freely determine their political status and pursue their economic, social, and cultural development,” a source within the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs told DZWatch. “We will continue to use our voice and influence within the Security Council to ensure that this right is respected and upheld.”

The Algerian delegation has reportedly emphasized the importance of adhering to international law and relevant UN resolutions regarding Western Sahara, while also stressing the need for a renewed commitment to finding a lasting political solution that is acceptable to all parties involved.

Algeria’s commitment to the Sahrawi cause is deeply rooted in its historical support for liberation movements and its belief in the principles of self-determination and decolonization. As a member of the Security Council, Algeria is determined to play a constructive role in promoting peace, security, and justice in the region.
