Minister’s Surprise Visit to Algiers Port Uncovers Bottleneck

In a move signaling increased scrutiny of port operations, the Minister of Interior, Local Authorities, and Transport, Said Saayoud, conducted an unannounced visit to the Port of Algiers. The primary focus of the visit was to assess the current state of container congestion and the prolonged dwell times impacting the port’s efficiency.

The Minister’s visit comes amidst growing concerns regarding delays by economic operators in retrieving their containers, leading to significant overcrowding. This congestion has negatively impacted port activities, resulting in direct economic costs across the supply chain and hindering foreign trade.

Coordination and Accountability Emphasized

During the visit, Minister Saayoud stressed the critical need for enhanced coordination between port authorities and Algerian customs services. He underscored the importance of holding economic operators accountable for their legal responsibilities, warning that appropriate regulatory measures, including blacklisting non-compliant entities, would be implemented to protect public interests and ensure discipline within the logistics market.

Positive Strides in Reducing Maritime Waiting Times

Minister Saayoud expressed satisfaction with the positive outcomes achieved in reducing maritime waiting times. He noted that only two ships were awaiting entry, a significant improvement previously considered challenging to achieve. He commended the efforts of port management, police, and customs officials for their improved coordination, which has led to enhanced performance and reduced delays for carriers and importers.

Accelerating Completion of Docks 8 and 9

A crucial aspect of the visit involved inspecting the progress of work on Docks 8 and 9. The Minister issued immediate instructions to expedite completion while adhering to established standards and specifications, emphasizing the importance of finishing the project before the summer season. He also called for the expansion of the maritime station to improve reception conditions and enhance the port’s capacity to handle increasing traffic, ultimately boosting operational readiness and supporting both tourism and trade.

Continuous Monitoring for Enhanced Port Efficiency

The visit concluded with clear directives to activate inspection and monitoring units, aimed at creating a more efficient and responsive port system. The goal is to ensure consistent oversight and prompt action to address any challenges that may arise, further streamlining operations at the Port of Algiers.
