Algiers – Algeria is intensifying efforts to establish a circular economic model within its mining sector, with a particular focus on valorizing mining residue, according to a statement made by the Minister of State, Minister of Hydrocarbons and Mines, Mohamed Arkab, on Sunday in Algiers.
The Ministry is actively working to expand projects aimed at repurposing solid mineral waste, effectively implementing the concept of “urban mining.” This initiative represents a strategic shift towards sustainable resource management and aims to minimize the environmental impact of mining operations.
“The goal is to transform what was previously considered waste into a valuable resource,” Minister Arkab explained. “By embracing the principles of the circular economy, we can create new economic opportunities, reduce our reliance on primary raw materials, and promote a cleaner, more sustainable mining industry.”
The urban mining concept involves recovering valuable materials from discarded products and waste streams, effectively turning urban areas into sources of raw materials. In the context of the mining sector, this translates to extracting residual minerals and metals from mining tailings and other waste products.
This initiative aligns with Algeria’s broader commitment to sustainable development and diversification of its economy. By promoting innovation and investment in circular economy solutions, the country aims to create a more resilient and environmentally responsible industrial sector.
The focus on valorizing mining residue is expected to have significant benefits, including reduced environmental pollution, conservation of natural resources, and the creation of new jobs in the recycling and resource recovery sectors. The Ministry is working closely with mining companies and research institutions to develop and implement effective strategies for achieving these goals.
