Arab League Condemns Israeli Settlement Expansion in West Bank

Cairo – The Arab League has strongly condemned the approval by Israeli authorities to construct new settlements in the occupied West Bank. Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit issued a statement denouncing the move as a blatant challenge to international will and a grave violation of international law.

The approval allows for the establishment of 19 new settlement outposts. The Arab League views this action as a provocative step that undermines any prospects for a peaceful resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Aboul Gheit emphasized that the international community overwhelmingly rejects settlement activity, deeming it illegal and an obstacle to a two-state solution.

“This decision reflects a persistent disregard for international norms and resolutions,” stated Aboul Gheit. “The continued expansion of settlements further entrenches the occupation and diminishes the possibility of a viable Palestinian state.”

The Arab League reiterated its unwavering support for the Palestinian people and their right to self-determination. It called on the international community, particularly the United Nations Security Council, to take decisive action to halt settlement construction and hold Israel accountable for its violations of international law. The organization emphasized the urgent need for a renewed and meaningful peace process based on internationally recognized parameters, including the establishment of a sovereign and independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.

The move is likely to further escalate tensions in the region and draw condemnation from other international bodies and governments. The Arab League vowed to continue its efforts to advocate for Palestinian rights and to work towards a just and lasting peace in the Middle East.
