Algiers, November 23, 2025 – Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Yacine Ould, presided over a national meeting yesterday evening dedicated to discussing the current state and future prospects of the grain sector. The meeting saw participation from producers across various provinces, along with the President of the National Chamber of Agriculture and the Secretary-General of the National Union of Algerian Farmers.
The discussions centered on the realities of the grain industry, with Minister Ould listening to the concerns and suggestions of producers. The aim is to revitalize this strategic sector, which the state prioritizes due to its crucial role in national food security.
Key topics addressed included a re-evaluation of the support system for various production inputs such as fertilizers and seeds. Participants also discussed the implementation of new insurance options to protect farmers against risks like natural disasters and drought. The meeting also focused on the need to mobilize new water resources in drought-stricken regions, promoting the construction of water barriers, rainwater harvesting, and the utilization of treated wastewater.
Emphasis was placed on improving and adapting grain cultivation techniques to suit specific regional characteristics and producer needs. This includes involving technical institutes and strengthening their role in improving on-the-ground performance. Furthermore, the meeting addressed the need to find solutions for farmers indebted due to drought and to revise the terms and procedures for obtaining the ‘Rfig’ seasonal loan. The creation of micro-loans specifically for farmers was also discussed.
Discussions also covered the provision of advanced and specialized agricultural equipment to increase production and prevent harvest losses. The availability of spare parts and the simplification of administrative procedures for farmers were highlighted, along with ensuring the supply of seed varieties adapted to each region’s specific environment.
Minister Ould assured attendees that immediate solutions would be found for some of the concerns raised, while the remaining issues would be addressed soon. He reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting grain producers in overcoming the challenges facing this vital sector.
