Algerian Mosques Revive Tradition of Reading Bukhari, Muwatta

Algiers, Algeria – Mosques across Algeria have commenced the annual tradition of reading Sahih al-Bukhari and Muwatta Imam Malik, marking the beginning of the month of Rajab. This long-standing practice, deeply rooted in Algeria’s cultural and religious heritage, particularly associated with Emir Abdelkader, will continue until Laylat al-Qadr, the 27th night of Ramadan.

The conclusion of these readings is marked by honoring those who have memorized and diligently studied the Prophetic traditions (Sunnah).

Minister of Religious Affairs, Youssef Belmahdi, emphasized the ministry’s commitment to preserving this tradition, which he described as an integral part of Algeria’s civilizational and religious legacy. He highlighted that this initiative reflects the ongoing effort to strengthen ties with religious heritage throughout the nation’s mosques.

Minister Belmahdi noted that Emir Abdelkader, a prominent figure in Algerian history, consistently read Sahih al-Bukhari during the evenings, even amidst the challenges of resisting French colonialism. He maintained this practice even during his exile in Damascus, where he continued reading in the Grand Umayyad Mosque.

The Minister added that the Algerian people’s participation in this tradition demonstrates their adherence to the heritage passed down through generations, as exemplified by the mosques of Algeria, including the Grand Mosque, which has witnessed the presence of scholars, sheikhs, and the general public.

Belmahdi affirmed Algeria’s continued commitment to serving the Holy Quran and the Sunnah, supporting mosques and those who memorize the Quran and Sunnah, and reinforcing the national religious authority. This year, the readings coincide with the commemoration of Isra and Mi’raj.

The tradition underscores the importance of Rajab in the Algerian religious calendar.
