Algeria’s Parliament Officially Inaugurates Children’s Parliament

Algiers – The People’s National Assembly (APN) today hosted the official inauguration ceremony of the Algerian Children’s Parliament, marking a significant institutional milestone.

This initiative reflects the Algerian state’s commitment to instilling the values of citizenship and civic participation from a young age, integrating the rising generations into a democratic learning process within a genuine legislative environment.

The establishment of the Children’s Parliament translates a long-term educational vision with political dimensions into practice. It aims to shift children from passive recipients to active participants by introducing them to constructive democratic dialogue, respect for differing opinions, and responsible freedom of expression, thus fostering their conscious engagement in school and community issues.

This undertaking embodies Algeria’s commitment to protecting children’s rights, not only in social and legal aspects but also institutionally and politically. It provides organized platforms for them to express their aspirations and participate in discussions related to their educational and cultural affairs, reinforcing their sense of belonging and responsibility.

The inauguration ceremony included the election of a speaker for the Children’s Parliament from among the student representatives, along with the appointment of its permanent structures. This signals the start of its first term, spanning from 2025 to 2027. This symbolic gesture carries clear political messages, emphasizing that democratic practice is built gradually and that the culture of representation and dialogue is acquired through experience, not slogans.

The Ministry of National Education continues to play a pivotal role in supporting this project through organizational and educational preparations, in coordination with the APN’s Committee on Education, Higher Education, Scientific Research, and Religious Affairs. This ensures the readiness of the student representatives and provides them with an environment that simulates genuine parliamentary work.

This initiative underscores that Algerian children are no longer viewed as mere subjects but as active partners in building a democratic national consciousness. DZWatch will continue to monitor the progress of this important initiative.
