Greenland Envoy Sparks Outrage: Denmark Condemns US Move

Washington’s decision to appoint a special envoy to Greenland has ignited a diplomatic row with Denmark, prompting strong condemnation and raising questions about the future of the autonomous territory.

President Trump, doubling down on his interest in the Arctic island, cited national security as the primary justification for the appointment. This move comes amidst renewed speculation about the US potentially seeking to acquire Greenland, an idea Trump has previously entertained.

The appointment of Republican Governor Jeff Landry as special envoy has been met with swift and sharp criticism from Copenhagen. Danish officials have summoned the US ambassador to express their displeasure and seek clarification on the implications of this decision.

“We need Greenland for national security. Look at the coastlines, Russian and Chinese ships are everywhere,” Trump stated during a press conference. He further emphasized the strategic importance of the island, hinting at potential efforts to secure it.

Landry, the newly appointed envoy, has openly expressed his ambition to make Greenland “part of the United States.” His enthusiasm has only fueled the controversy surrounding the situation.

Greenland’s Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen, alongside Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, issued a joint statement reaffirming the principles of international law and national sovereignty, implicitly rejecting any notion of forced annexation or acquisition. “National borders and state sovereignty are based on international law,” the statement emphasized.

Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen has labeled the envoy appointment “unacceptable,” confirming that the US ambassador was summoned for a meeting that included a representative from Greenland. A clear message was delivered, drawing a firm line and demanding explanations for the US action.

The European Union has voiced its support for Denmark, adding further weight to the international pressure on Washington to clarify its intentions regarding Greenland. The situation remains tense as observers await further developments in this unfolding diplomatic crisis.
