Algerian Communication Minister Mohammed Laqab revealed on Tuesday that the country’s highest authorities have issued directives to work diligently on the creation of a national social media platform. This initiative is reportedly a significant concern for President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, underscoring the government’s commitment to enhancing digital communication within the nation.

Addressing the queries of the National People’s Assembly deputies, Laqab spoke about the advertising sector, acknowledging the distribution’s current flaws, especially given the absence of specific criteria. He pointed out the difficulties faced by the National Agency for Communication, Publishing, and Advertising in equally distributing advertisements across Algeria’s 160 accredited newspapers, describing the process as highly complex.

In an attempt to navigate the tumultuous advertising market, Laqab emphasized that stability would be unattainable without the presence of five billion small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). He stressed the state’s crucial role in bolstering and fortifying national media, a sector that Algeria has never neglected. Algerian Social Media Platform

Further, Laqab noted that Algerian printing presses have suffered a 50% loss in tandem with the global paper market crisis, compounded by newspapers failing to pay their dues . Algerian Social Media Platform

The sector’s leading official proposed the creation of a national fund to support journalism and journalists in Algeria, stating that it doesn’t necessarily have to be state-funded.

Laqab dismissed allegations regarding official authorities constricting press freedom, attributing such beliefs to the financial vulnerabilities of media outlets, which he believes has reflected on the quality of media content in Algeria.

Moreover, he contended that while freedom of the press is essential, it should come with regulations that guide its course—a stance adopted by many countries worldwide, especially in the West.
