Sudan: Ceasefire Hinges on RSF Accepting Gov’t Peace Plan

Khartoum – A comprehensive government initiative for peace in Sudan is contingent upon the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) implementing the government’s vision, according to Sudanese Justice Minister Abdalla Derf. The minister stated that the initiative aligns with the Saudi-American efforts to halt the ongoing conflict, underscoring Khartoum’s commitment to a political resolution and an end to the fighting.

In an interview, Derf emphasized that the government welcomes all previous peace initiatives and that the Prime Minister’s proposals demonstrate a serious commitment to achieving peace. He called upon the international community to support the Sudanese government’s initiative and work towards its success.

Key to Ceasefire: RSF Compliance

Minister Derf clarified that a ceasefire in Sudan is directly linked to the RSF’s implementation of the government’s peace vision. He stressed that any genuine de-escalation requires a clear commitment from the RSF to cease violations against civilians. Derf urged the international community to compel the RSF to adhere to the government’s proposals.

No Future Role for RSF

The Justice Minister warned that the Sudanese people would not accept any future role for the RSF in the political or military landscape, given the atrocities allegedly committed during the war. He described the situation in Sudan as a comprehensive aggression supported by external forces. He asserted that the government’s peace vision stems from preserving state sovereignty, ensuring citizen security, and ending the war in a manner that achieves stability and protects the country’s unity.

Prime Minister Kamel Idris presented an initiative to the United Nations Security Council on Monday, aiming to establish peace in Sudan through a comprehensive ceasefire and the disarmament of the Rapid Support Forces.
