Sudan: Thousands Displaced by Escalating Violence in Kordofan

DZWatch Exclusive: The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has reported a significant increase in displacement across Sudan’s South and North Kordofan states. In the past 48 hours alone, an estimated 2,615 individuals have been forced to flee their homes due to escalating insecurity and ongoing clashes between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

According to an IOM statement released Tuesday evening, field teams have assessed that 1,475 people were displaced from Kadugli, the capital of South Kordofan, between December 21st and 22nd. The primary cause cited was the worsening security situation. Additionally, 180 individuals were displaced from El Delling, 60 from Dalami, and 900 from the village of Al-Shoul in the Bara province of North Kordofan.

Kadugli and El Delling have been under siege for several months, reportedly by the RSF and allied factions of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N). The three states comprising the Kordofan region (North, West, and South) have witnessed intense fighting between the SAF and RSF in recent weeks, leading to the displacement of tens of thousands.

The IOM reports that displaced populations are seeking refuge in various locations within South Kordofan, North Kordofan, and White Nile states. The organization emphasizes that the security situation remains volatile and is closely monitoring developments. Just days prior, on December 18th, the IOM announced that the total number of displaced persons within the three Kordofan states had reached 50,445 between October 26th and December 17th.

The humanitarian crisis in Sudan continues to deepen due to the conflict between the SAF and RSF, which began in April 2023. The conflict, stemming from disagreements over the integration of the RSF into the military, has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths and the displacement of an estimated 13 million people.
