Arab League Backs Sudanese Peace Initiative at UN

The Arab League has voiced its support for the Sudanese peace initiative presented to the United Nations Security Council. Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit urged positive engagement with the proposal, emphasizing its potential to contribute to a lasting resolution of the conflict in Sudan.

In a statement released yesterday, Aboul Gheit lauded Sudanese Prime Minister Kamel Idriss’s address to the Security Council, describing it as a comprehensive peace initiative containing significant political, humanitarian, and security messages. He characterized the initiative as a serious framework that could be built upon to achieve stability in Sudan.

Aboul Gheit stressed that the initiative warrants positive consideration as a crucial component of any inclusive solution aimed at ending the armed conflict and restoring security and stability in Sudan. He underscored the importance of preventing any threats to Sudan’s national unity or the fragmentation of its social fabric.

The Secretary-General highlighted the significance of addressing the principles of transitional justice, reparations, national reconciliation, and inclusivity outlined in the initiative. He asserted that these principles are essential for fostering sustainable peace, preserving the unity of society and the state, and preventing the recurrence of violence or descent into division.

Prime Minister Idriss presented the peace initiative to the Security Council, proposing a comprehensive ceasefire and the disarmament of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The initiative also calls for an inclusive Sudanese-Sudanese dialogue based on reconciliation and integration into society. It proposes a comprehensive ceasefire under regional and international monitoring, the withdrawal of RSF forces from all areas they control, and the assembly of their fighters in designated camps.

Furthermore, the initiative aims to facilitate the return of displaced persons to their homes and refugees to their homeland, as well as the disarmament of the RSF militia under agreed-upon international supervision.

Sudan has been embroiled in a conflict between the army and the Rapid Support Forces since April 2023, resulting in tens of thousands of deaths and the displacement of approximately 13 million people. The conflict has also exacerbated a humanitarian crisis considered among the worst globally.
