AFCON 2025: High-Tech Security Foils Laser Pranksters

The Africa Cup of Nations 2025, hosted in Morocco, kicked off amidst great excitement. However, security forces faced an early test dealing with disruptive behavior within the stadiums.

This year’s tournament, the first to be held on Moroccan soil, has implemented unprecedented security measures targeting troublemakers. The goal is to enhance discipline and ensure the safety of all attendees.

During the opening match between Morocco and Comoros, some fans were observed directing laser pointers at the referee and players, attempting to influence the game and disrupt the officials.

Security teams swiftly intervened, identifying the perpetrators with remarkable accuracy and escorting them out of the stadium. This action did not disrupt the match or the overall atmosphere.

The use of laser pointers in stadiums is internationally prohibited due to the direct risk it poses to the safety of players and referees, and its negative impact on their concentration, especially during critical moments. This behavior is also classified as unsportsmanlike conduct, tarnishing the image of fans and contradicting the spirit of competition.

This strict action is part of the new organizational policy adopted for the Africa Cup of Nations, based on a “zero tolerance” principle for anything that threatens safety or disrupts public order inside and outside the stadiums.

This intervention is facilitated by the advanced surveillance system in place at Moroccan stadiums. Over 800 surveillance cameras, along with facial recognition technology, have been installed as part of a comprehensive plan to detect any violations and ensure that matches are held in a safe and sporting environment free of misconduct. The technology allowed authorities to quickly identify and apprehend individuals attempting to disrupt play. The successful implementation of these measures demonstrates a strong commitment to maintaining order and ensuring a positive experience for all participants.
