Guinea-Bissau Junta Frees Six Detained Political Opponents

The military regime in Guinea-Bissau announced Tuesday evening the release of six political opponents who had been detained since the November 26th coup that ousted President Umaro Sissoco Embaló. The coup leaders described the move as a “gesture of goodwill” amidst growing regional and international pressure for a return to constitutional order.

In a statement, the military leadership clarified that the release of the detainees represents “a commitment to returning to constitutional order and respecting international rights.” The decision follows a recent visit to Bissau by a high-level Senegalese delegation, who met with the detainees and demanded their release.

Last week, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) threatened to impose “specific sanctions” on any party that obstructs the return to civilian rule. Guinea-Bissau, a nation burdened by a history of coups, is undergoing another transitional period following Embaló’s departure from the country.

The military leadership has appointed General Horta Intam, a close associate of Embaló, to head a one-year transitional period, a move met with widespread skepticism regarding the future of the political process. Meanwhile, opposition candidate Fernando Dias has sought refuge in the Nigerian embassy, which granted him asylum. However, Pereira and several other opposition leaders remain in detention.
