Gaza: 90% Unable to Afford Basic Food, Aid Insufficient

The humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip continues to deteriorate two months after the ceasefire, with persistent displacement and worsening living conditions. Amjad Al-Shawa, Director of the Palestinian NGO Network in Gaza, reports that Israeli restrictions have confined hundreds of thousands of Palestinians to just 41% of the territory, less than 100 square kilometers, creating increasingly dire circumstances.

According to Al-Shawa, more than half a million people have lost their homes, while thousands are living in the remnants of destroyed buildings. This mass displacement, coupled with limited access to resources, has created a crisis where 90% of the population cannot afford basic food items.

The lack of essential supplies, rising prices, and loss of livelihoods have left the vast majority of Gazans struggling to survive. The health crisis is also escalating due to the spread of waste and the destruction of water and sanitation networks, Al-Shawa stated.

While some aid has been allowed into Gaza, the limited quantities and restrictions on the types of materials permitted have failed to significantly improve the situation. Al-Shawa argues that these restrictions deepen the gap in essential needs and prevent any meaningful improvement in the deteriorating humanitarian situation. Israel permits only small amounts of essential items, especially food, hygiene products, and sanitation supplies.

The ongoing displacement and conditions in shelters are exacerbating the already fragile health of the population, particularly leading to malnutrition. Al-Shawa notes that declining hygiene standards are contributing to this problem.

Traders are receiving only about 20% of the required fresh fruits, vegetables, and proteins needed by the population. These goods are subject to significant import fees and coordination, which drastically increase prices, making them unaffordable for most people. Israel continues to block the entry of essential protein sources, eggs, and fresh produce, further compounding the crisis.
