BIEM Exam Reform: Focus on Core Subjects for Fairer Evaluation

Algiers – The Ministry of National Education is exploring potential reforms to the Brevet d’Enseignement Moyen (BIEM) examination, commonly known as the middle school certificate exam. The proposed changes aim to streamline the evaluation process and promote equal opportunities for all students.

Minister of National Education, Mohamed Seghir Saadaoui, revealed that the ministry is currently studying the possibility of exempting students from certain subjects with low weightings in the overall score. The focus would then shift to the core subjects that carry greater significance in determining a student’s final grade. This initiative is designed to enhance competitiveness and ensure a level playing field for all candidates.

During a parliamentary session, Minister Saadaoui explained that this approach aligns with a broader vision to improve the quality of education and tailor the academic path to students’ abilities and future aspirations. He emphasized that the proposed adjustments would enable students to concentrate on the essential subjects that prepare them for selecting appropriate specializations in secondary school.

Saadaoui further stated that these measures are part of a comprehensive reform package aimed at developing middle school education. He underscored the importance of maintaining fairness and transparency in the educational process, ensuring the protection of students’ interests and upholding the principle of equal opportunity for all candidates.

The Minister stressed that any modifications to the subjects or the method of calculating grades will be implemented according to precise regulations and clear national standards. This will guarantee the quality of education and safeguard the credibility of official examinations. The ministry aims to create a more focused and equitable assessment system for middle school students.
