Deadly Explosion Rocks Homs Mosque, Casualties Reported

Homs, Syria – A devastating explosion ripped through the Imam Ali bin Abi Talib Mosque in the Wadi al-Dahab district of Homs earlier today. Preliminary reports from the Syrian Interior Ministry indicate that at least six people have been killed and 21 others injured in what authorities are calling a “terrorist” attack.

According to a statement released by the Interior Ministry, internal security units were immediately dispatched to the scene and a security cordon has been established around the mosque. Investigative teams are currently working to gather evidence and identify those responsible for this heinous act.

The explosion occurred during Friday prayers, a time when the mosque is typically filled with worshippers. Witnesses reported a scene of chaos and devastation in the immediate aftermath. The injured have been transported to the University Hospital in Homs, where some are said to be in critical condition. There are fears that the death toll may rise as rescue operations continue.

Initial reports suggest the explosion was caused by an improvised explosive device (IED). The Syrian state news agency, SANA, broadcast images showing the damage inside the mosque.

The director of information in the Homs Governorate stated that the explosion originated from a bomb. State media further elaborated, reporting that the IEDs were planted in a corner of the mosque known to be crowded with worshippers.

As of yet, no group has claimed responsibility for the attack. The Syrian Interior Ministry has not publicly accused any specific organization. DZWatch will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as they become available.
