Two Chadian soldiers were killed and another seriously injured following a drone strike on a military camp near the border with Sudan on Friday morning. The attack targeted a Chadian army position in the town of Tine, eastern Chad, close to the Sudanese border.
Sources indicate the drone originated from Sudan and struck the camp, which is located approximately three kilometers from the Chad-Sudan border. The incident resulted in the immediate deaths of two soldiers and left another with critical injuries.
Hamit Hassan, governor of the province encompassing the border town of Tine, confirmed the fatalities but stated he had no information regarding the identity of the perpetrators.
A Chadian military intelligence officer, speaking on condition of anonymity, stated that the drone appeared to have come from Sudanese territory. However, it remains unclear whether the Sudanese army or the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) were responsible for launching the device. “We are still investigating the origin of this drone,” the officer said. “If it is proven to be Sudanese military, we will exercise our right to respond.”
The officer added that the air force base in the city of Abéché, eastern Chad, is “on high alert,” and that ground reinforcements have already been dispatched to Tine.
Neither the Sudanese army nor the Rapid Support Forces have issued any comment regarding the incident.
Tine serves as a transit point for Sudanese refugees before they are transferred to safer camps further inland in Chad. Humanitarian sources report that a lack of funding for water, sanitation, and shelter in these camps is slowing down resettlement efforts. The ongoing conflict in Sudan has displaced over 12 million people to date, according to the International Rescue Committee.
