Phnom Penh – Cambodia and Thailand have jointly announced an immediate ceasefire along their shared border, effective from midday local time today. The agreement, reached following a meeting of the Joint Border Committee, aims to de-escalate tensions and foster stability in the region.
A joint statement released by both nations confirms their commitment to halting all hostilities and suspending troop movements along the border. This measure is intended to calm the situation and create an environment conducive to the return of normalcy for affected communities.
The agreement also includes provisions for facilitating the safe return of displaced civilians to their homes. Both Cambodia and Thailand have pledged to ensure the security and well-being of returning residents.
Furthermore, both countries emphasized the importance of resuming border demarcation negotiations through diplomatic channels to achieve a lasting resolution to outstanding disputes. This commitment underscores their dedication to peaceful conflict resolution.
As part of the agreement, observers from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) will be welcomed to monitor the implementation of the ceasefire and verify compliance. Their presence will serve as an independent mechanism to ensure adherence to the terms of the agreement.
This ceasefire marks a positive step towards resolving the border dispute through dialogue and diplomacy. It reflects a shared desire to promote security and stability within the region, potentially paving the way for future cooperation and strengthened relations between Cambodia and Thailand.
